“If any NRI’s PAN is still invalid, he or she must inform the appropriate jurisdictional Assessing Officer of his or her NRI status and provide any necessary documentation.
The following is a list of the supporting documents needed to activate PAN for NRIs:
A. PAN Card Copies; and
B. any of the records listed below:
a. copy of passport attesting to NRI status or
b. A copy of the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card issued by the Indian government,
c. A copy of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card that the Indian government has issued,
d. Copy of another national identification number, proof of citizenship, or taxpayer identification number properly attested by “Apostille” (in regard to nations that have ratified the 1961 Hague Convention), the Indian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate in the nation where the applicant is based, or by duly authorized staff members of Scheduled Banks registered in India that have overseas branches.
